The objective of the News Editor is to ensure the production of the very best news content on all platforms. The News Editor looks after the team of multi-media journalists tasked with covering news. The News Editor makes sure stories are provided to all output areas — not just print — dedicating the right level of resources for daily, weekly and monthly production cycles. Through their integration with the EIC and other editors, the News Editor also ensures a coordinated, collaborative, and integrated content generation process for all Compass journalists, maximizing efficiency and impact. • Directly manages their respective writers. • Manages and answers for the efficiency of the joint planning system. • Coordinates the agendas and planning of content for news. • Manages, prioritizes and enables content ideas from journalists at their desks. • Writes story assignments in their niche. • Utilizes analytics results, evaluations, and recommendations regarding content to inform their decisions on content planning and delivery. • Coordinates with Digital Editor and helps design social media strategy. • Responds to Digital Editor regarding breaking and developing news stories. • Collaborates with photographers and multimedia journalists from the beginning of the story planning process and thus ensures the highest quality multimedia content packages. • Run the daily editorial meetings and attend other required editorial team meetings. • Facilitates and chairs editorial meetings for the news team. • Chooses the best journalist for every story. • Hires external contributors when there is no appropriate journalist to cover a story, respecting budgetary limitations. • Ensures that content is accurate, reliable, high-quality and completed with headlines sub-headlines and particles from their journalists. • Edits the content created by a journalist before delivering it to designers. • Constantly searches for new journalists (before vacancies might happen), recruit them as freelancers, and find the best experts to contribute to their niche. Qualifications At least 10 years of experience as a News Editor preferably in a Major Market • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, under pressure and meet tight deadlines • Willingness and ability to work long hours if necessary to complete projects, as is the nature of the industry • The successful candidate must be proficient in grammar and the professional use of the English language • Must qualify as journalism or related field or be educated to at least the level of a Bachelor’s degree
