WORC Completes 2024 Paid Summer Internship Programme for Caymanian Students Pursuing Careers in the Construction Industry

Grand Cayman, 01 October 2024 – Workforce Opportunities and Residency Cayman (WORC) is proud to announce the successful completion of its 2024 Paid Summer Internship Programme, specifically designed for Caymanians pursuing a degree or certification in the Construction Industry. This initiative, a key part of WORC’s commitment to developing local talent, connected students with leading companies in the construction sector for hands-on experience and professional development.

Over the summer, multiple students engaged in real-world projects across various disciplines within the construction industry, ranging from architecture and engineering to project management and building consultancy. Companies such as Davenport Development, AMR Consulting Engineers, Trio Architecture, Arch & Godfrey, and McAlpine hosted interns, offering them the opportunity to apply their academic knowledge and gain valuable insights into their future careers.

The programme ran from June 2024 to August 2024, with some participants working for six to eight weeks. Each intern was assigned a mentor, providing personalised guidance and support throughout the internship. These companies ensured that the interns gained both technical skills and a comprehensive understanding of the demands of the Construction Industry.

This internship initiative highlights WORC’s ongoing efforts to invest in the future of Caymanian professionals by fostering educational growth and offering real-world experiences to shape the next generation of Construction Industry leaders.

Katherine Whittaker, Head of Labour Demands, Development & Training said, “We had originally planned to launch our summer internship programme in 2020, but like many others, our efforts were halted by the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the setbacks, we remained committed to providing this valuable opportunity for Caymanians, and we are proud to have successfully achieved this goal in 2024. It’s a testament to our resilience and dedication to supporting the growth and development of local talent.”

Ms. Allison Anglin, Acting Manager of the National Training and Development Unit (WORC), stated, “As we navigate a time where many young Caymanians face growing anxieties about their futures, our summer internship programme has provided more than just technical experience. It has empowered students with confidence, direction, and practical skills that will help shape their careers. WORC remains committed to bridging the gap between education and employment, offering vital opportunities that build not only a strong workforce but a more hopeful and resilient future for Caymanians.”

Mrs. Denise Myers, Programme Coordinator of the National Training and Development Unit (WORC), stated, "These responsible and forward-thinking young adults have left an indelible mark on their employers by turning classroom theory into real-world practice. Through these opportunities, lasting positive relationships were formed between participants and their supervisors. As one supervisor remarked, 'I learned just as much from the intern as they did from me,' highlighting the mutual growth fostered by these valuable experiences."

WORC Director, Mr. Jeremy Scott said, “We invite companies to partner with WORC to create valuable internship opportunities.  By collaborating with us, your company can play a pivotal role in providing young Caymanians with hands-on experience. This partnership benefits interns by developing their professional skills and offers your business access to a motivated pool of local talent eager to contribute to your organisation. Together, we can create a stronger, more prepared workforce.”
